Approximately 600 Myanmar migrant workers at the M-Apparel Co. Ltd. garment factory in Mae Pa, Quarter 10,Mae sot, Tak Province on the Thai-Burma border went on strike in the afternoon of 14 May. The workers had been owned their April wages since 10 May. The manager, however, repeatedly postponed payment. When the workers went to collect their wages on Monday, 14 May, the manager told them that he would not pay them until 17 May. The workers were angered over management’s continued delay of their wage payment, as well as their regularly low wages.
The workers therefore did not return to work for the 6:00 overtime shift. The strike continued on Tuesday, 15 May with workers refusing to return to work. Currently, the workers have informed the Thai Labour Protection Office of their grievances and are in the process of submitting a case for negotiation with their employer. Staff from the Yaung Chi Oo Workers Association, the Joint Action Committee for Burmese Affairs(JACBA), MAP Foundation and the Labour Law Clinic have been providing legal assistance to the workers.
